Everyone is back to work today and you can see it on their faces! Some co-workers are cheerfully saying "Happy New Year" while others are at their desks surfing the internet and looking at job postings. I'm not a philosopher but I find the first day back to work after the holidays is like a test that produces a very clear answer.
After having the holidays off, you can always tell who is happy with their career and who isn't. It's only fitting that today I ran across an article on How to Get the Respect You Deserve at Work. For those who are looking to start the year off on a good note, I thought this article was pretty bang on. In fact, I've already sent it to some friends and family who are struggling with many of the issues mentioned. I know the post is intended for men, but I find it applies to women even more! Especially the tips on gossiping, not caring so much, and knowing when to keep your thoughts to yourself. It seems guys have those problems too. :)
Alot of people are also heading into the Promotion Zone. Career reviews, goal setting, these are all hot topics in January. I mean, who *doesn't* like goal setting? <groan>
What it means is that you are getting more money (yes!) but you likely have no idea what you are doing in your new job (dammit!). So, in my best effort to lending a help hand - check out the blog Good Boss, Bad Boss by Bob Sutton and his recent post on 12 Things Good Bosses Believe featured on the Harvard Business Review blog.
While I agree with numbers one through eleven, tip number twelve is my personal favourite.
"Because I wield power over others, I am at great risk of acting like an insensitive jerk — and not realizing it."
And if you're curious about if that could be you, try this simple quiz: Are you a certified asshole?
You might get some surprising results.
Happy first day back to work!
