One of Oprah's favourite questions is "What do you know for sure?"
And I'll tell you.
It's that Oprah controls the popular opinion about all of the books we read.
It's not unusual when she makes a book recommendation and several hours later it's reached epic proportions of fame. Sold out. #1 on the Best Sellers list. In an instant. Not to mention you can't find the book anywhere.
So, it was no surprise that when Information is Beautifuldid a visualization of the most popular books based on best seller lists, borrowed library books, various polls, surveys and of course, Oprah's Book List, that I discovered some interested recommendations.

The first thing I noticed was that most of the books I've read are lingering around the edge of the cloud diagram. The next thing I noticed? Two very interesting book titles. The Color Purple. and Beloved. You may recognize these titles as they were both turned into movies, which just happened to star our friend Oprah.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Oprah. But its interesting to see how much influence she yields over our literary choices. I was surprised to see those titles along with others like A Clockwork Orange, Twilight, Harry Potter and the DaVinci Code.
It makes me feel as though we shouldn't put all of our potential book choices in the hands of Oprah Winfrey. Perhaps she does find great authors on occassion, but her opinion is just one of many. And it leaves me feeling a bit skeptical about her recommendations when her two personal achievements are sitting in bold letters on a list called "Books Everyone Should Read".
On a happier note - what books have you read? :)
